Globally, health officials and scientists are closely tracking a new mutation of the coronavirus labelled as AY.4.2.

With a majority of cases being reported in the United Kingdom, according to the Ministry of Health’s latest update on social media, the new mutation has arrived in Malaysia

Taking to Twitter, here is what the Ministry of Health announced yesterday about the new coronavirus variant.

“MOH confirms that there have been 2 cases of the Covid-19 subvariant Delta AY.4.2 in Malaysia.”

“Both cases originated from the UK (Malaysian students returning from abroad).”

According to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham, “The two Malaysians arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Oct and their first RT-PCR results were negative.”

“However, their second test taken on Oct 7 during the quarantine period came back positive.”

Dr Noor Hisham adds that vaccines currently used are still effective against the AY.4.2 variant, and measures like quarantine and testing can help reduce the risk of transmission.

Let’s stay vigilant people!
