For many people, spelling their names wrong can be 1 of their biggest pet peeves. In some cases, one wrong letter can change the meaning of a name, and that was what happened to a customer at a coffeehouse chain in KL.

Just recently, a Malaysian woman, Bavitra, shared her disappointing experience at a coffeehouse via her Facebook post. Instead of Bavi or Bavitra, her name was written as “Babi” on her takeaway cup. Bavitra was enraged and said that she is going to sue the place. Here’s what happened.

Bavitra and her husband recently went for a medical check-up and they decided to get coffee at a famous coffee joint located in the medical centre. As per normal practice, the barista asked for a name to be written on the takeaway cup. When the barista couldn’t grasp Bavitra’s name, her husband decided to spell it out, B.A.V.I… But the outcome was self-explanatory, as shown in the image above.

“I have to protect my name & identity”

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Bavitra said that she cannot tolerate this mistake. To her, this blunder is unacceptable because all Malaysians would know that no one would be named Babi.

“Why can’t the barista think? Didn’t he realise that what he wrote was weird and off? I can’t believe he had the audacity to serve my husband the drink with that name on it.”

She added that this was not her first time as she had experienced a similar situation in the past where she had to confront the barista on the spot before they corrected her name. Many have advised Bavitra to take it easy but to her, she is merely exercising her right to protect her name and identity.

“I can’t let anyone spell my name or call me that way.”

Bavitra also told WORLD OF BUZZ that prior to sharing the incident on social media, she had contacted the said coffeehouse but at the time of writing (17 May), the organisation has yet to respond to her.

On the other hand, the medical center that the couple visited is well aware of the incident and had extended their apologies to Bavitra.

When asked if she will patronise the place again, Bavitra said no.

“Even if they apologise, I will not visit this joint again”, she told WORLD OF BUZZ.

At the time of writing, the said coffeehouse has yet to release a statement regarding the matter.

Do you think this is merely a forgivable blunder or an offensive mistake? Will you confront the barista if you notice your name is spelt wrongly?
