The President of the National Cycling Federation of Malaysia (PKBM), Datuk Amarjit Singh, wants cyclists on the roads to be protected.
This came after social media users incited other drivers to hit the cyclists on the road following the viral confrontation between a group of cyclists and a RapidKL bus driver recently. Amarjit, who is also the President of the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC), said PKBM views the recent viral incident involving a clash between several cyclists and bus drivers seriously.
In response to this matter, Amarjit reminded all parties to remain calm by not taking action outside the law, and PKBM will always emphasise safety aspects as the main consideration in all cycling activities, whether for sports or recreational purposes.
Amarjit not only urges PDRM to investigate those who incite others to act harshly towards the cyclists, but also reminds everyone about a cyclist’s right to be on the road.
“Cyclists also have rights as a group of road users and any intentional accident to any cyclist using a motor vehicle can be an offence under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.”
He said that cycling activities are allowed on public roads unless there is a specific prohibition, such as on highways or through signs prohibiting the activity, which PKBM will monitor from time to time.
As for the cyclists on the road, Amarjit also reminds all riders to obey traffic rules and take safety measures such as wearing a recognised helmet, as well as using lights on the front and back of the bicycles.
In the meantime, PKBM also recommends that cyclists always take a cautious approach to mitigate the risk of accidents with motor vehicles, especially on routes commonly used by heavy vehicles. Amarjit also reminded cyclists not to act aggressively and be considerate of other road users, reported Sinar Harian.
