A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer and a businessman known as ‘Datuk Roy’ was charged in the Sessions Court yesterday (May 25), on 2 charges of soliciting and accepting bribes amounting to RM640,000.

The money was allegedly given to him as a bribe t0 prevent MACC from remanding the son of former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Fakhri Yassin Mahiaddin.

According to a report by Harian Metro, 43-year-old Mohd Rasyidi Mohd Said and 54-year-old Datuk Roy, whose real name is Mohd Hussein Mohd Nasir, pleaded not guilty after the charges against them were read before Judge Azura Alwi.

“Understood, Your Honour. (We) plead not guilty,” they both said.

As shared by Berita Harian, they are accused of corruption as they had allegedly asked for and received bribes of RM400,000 and RM240,000 respectively as encouragement to not remand Datuk Fakhri Yassin Mahiaddin during a MACC investigation.

These offenses allegedly took place at a restaurant in Lorong Kurau, Bangsar between 9pm and 11pm on March 5 (Sunday) and a fast food restaurant in Sri Hartamas Village between 2pm and 4pm on March 6 (Monday).

The prosecution of this case is in accordance with Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which can be punished under Section 24 of the same act and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

It provides for a prison sentence of not more than 20 years and a fine of not less than 5 times the total value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher if convicted.

The judge has since set a bail of RM15,000 and RM10,000 with one surety respectively for Datuk Roy and Mohd Rasyidi, as well as the additional condition that their passports will be submitted to the court and that they will report to the MACC KL office until the case is over.

The court set July 7 for the re-mention of the case.

Stay tuned for more updates.
