After Bukit Bintang and surrounding areas were left strewn with trash following Christmas Eve, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) took proactive measures against littering in the city centre.

Just one day after Christmas, DBKL enforcement officers patrolled areas in and around Jalan Bukit Bintang, reprimanding and issuing compounds to those caught littering in public.

Taking to its Facebook page, DBKL said that this was part of its “Ops Anti-Litter,” with enforcement action beginning at 8 PM yesterday (26 December). In the photos attached to the post, DBKL enforcement officers can be seen issuing compounds on-the-spot to several offenders.

The city council revealed that throughout the operation, six compounds were issued for offences under Section 47(1)(a) for placing, throwing, or causing the disposal of litter, cigarette butts, paper waste, boxes, and various other waste materials in public areas.

In addition to issuing compounds, DBKL said that these enforcement measures aim to ensure that the public and business owners consistently adhere to established regulations.

This includes maintaining the cleanliness of the surrounding environment, refraining from placing obstructions over drains or public walkways, ensuring waste is not discharged into drains, and avoiding the disposal of trash or cigarette butts in public spaces.

“Simultaneously, officers provided courteous reminders and advice to the public to prioritise cleanliness, utilise the provided bins, and collectively play a role in ensuring the urban environment remains clean, comfortable, and conducive,” the city council added.

Previously, DBKL earned praise from the public for issuing on-the-spot compounds to smokers caught littering cigarette butts in public under Ops Anti-Litter.
