Being a doctor is not easy as you are responsible for other people’s lives. You’re literally holding other people’s lives in your hands so often that good doctors will always prioritise others before themselves. For Liu, a pancreatic surgeon in Huai’an, China, he took this to heart and decided to save a patient although he was suffering from severe back pain.

According to Sinchew, the incident happened at 6pm on December 28th, 2019, when a patient needed surgery immediately to save his life. The doctor on duty at that time was Liu and he quickly started preparing for the operation.
Suddenly, he felt a stabbing pain around his waist and abdomen area, but he continued with his preparations. The patient was in a critical condition and surgery must be performed as soon as possible, so Liu knew that he couldn’t waste time.
Although he was suffering, he decided to ignore his own pain and took a painkiller injection so he could focus on saving the patient instead. The pain abated and Liu decided to go ahead with the operation which lasted more than an hour.

Thanks to his quick actions, the patient’s life was saved and the condition stabilised after the operation. Liu left the operation theatre but the pain in his waist and abdomen started again. He couldn’t take it anymore so his colleagues rushed him to the urology department for examination while he was still dressed in his surgical scrubs.
It was discovered that Liu was suffering from 1cm stones and water that accumulated in his urinary tract. If the situation was not treated well, it could lead to an infection and deteriorate to urinary sepsis, which can be life-threatening.
Liu was rushed to the operating theatre still in his scrubs as there was no time to change his clothes. This time, the doctor became the patient. Luckily, his operation went smoothly and Liu is now on the way to recovery. Netizens praised Liu for his dedication in saving patients’ lives but Liu said that his patients always come first. He shrugged it off and said he was just doing his duty as a doctor.
