If this were to happen, that means that standard 6 students this year would be the last batch ever to take UPSR!
The Ministry of Education (MOE) is currently in its final stages of their study in determining whether to continue or abolish the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR). As reported by Harian Metro, Deputy Education Minister, Muslimin Yahaya said that his ministry would be makig an announcement regarding their decision soon.

If the decision is made to abolish UPSR, the Deputy Minister said that no other exam will be introduced to replace it. Instead, primary school students’ academic achievements would be gauged through their overall performance, essay test and an interview process which would determine their place in five different types of secondary schools. Muslimin asserted,
“UPSR is just an examination and can be replaced with other methods such as evaluating overall performance which is more genuine and continuous which would be more fair and even up more avenues for students.”
Last June, the Education Director-General, Datuk Dr Habibah Abdul Rahim announced that approximately 400,000 students are expected to apply for the evaluation examination to enter specific schools for placement in five different secondary schools. These schools include:
- Sekolah Berasrama Penuh (SBP).
- Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA).
- Sekolah Menengah Teknik (SMT).
- Kolej Vokasional (KV).
- Maktab Tentera Diraja (MTD).
However, this examination doesn’t include application to Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) considering the institution already have its own instrument for student selection.
