As consumers, we have the right to not purchase any drinks from an eatery when dining in, as long as we spend for their food. However, do the vendors have the right to charge us an additional fee for something we don’t get?

An image of a Kopitiam, allegedly in Penang recently went viral on social media after it was shared in the Facebook group. According to the notice on the wall, customers are told that each table will be charged an additional RM2 if they don’t order any single drinks. Nothing much was revealed by the person who posted the image, except that it was reportedly a Kopitiam in Penang.
“You look like a beggar”
Netizens, on the other hand, were baffled to see such a “rule” being implemented at an eatery, saying that to charge customers for something they did not order is just too much.
Some also highlighted the possible consequences that might follow if no actions are taken.
“This is just too much. You might as well rob someone else,” commented a user.
“Penang government should take action.”
One netizen commented, “Honestly, they make themselves look like beggars.”
“This Kopitiam is digging its own grave. It’s affecting the other vendors in the place. If no one is getting drinks, the boss might increase the rental because he doesn’t make much from it.”
“If it’s RM2, it has to be at a tourist spot, and they’re targeting the tourists who came in big groups but only get 2 drinks to share,” stated another user.
