A doctor in Gujarat, India was arrested after he allegedly performed a Caesarean while intoxicated that caused the death of a woman and her newborn.
Kamini Chachi, the 22-year-old victim was sent to the government hospital in Botad, Gujarat on Monday night (26 November) due to labour pain.
The doctor, Dr Paresh Lakhani, is a senior doctor who has been working at the hospital for 15 years. He performed a C-section but the baby, unfortunately, died at birth while the mother was bleeding excessively, as reported by Channel News Asia.

Her family then decided to rush her to a private hospital but she died on the way there. They informed the police and claimed that the doctor was drunk during the operation.
“The police found that the doctor was indeed drunk while on duty, based on a breathalyser test. He was first booked under the Prohibition Act and was arrested. His blood sample was sent for testing,” said Botad Superintendent of Police Harshad Mehta.

The Statesman reported that the woman’s body was sent to Bhavnagar Civil Hospital for a post-mortem. The results will then be sent to a committee headed by the civil surgeon to examine and verify the accusation.
“As per Supreme Court guidelines, only a committee headed by a civil surgeon can determine negligence charges. If the report is positive, we will book him under provisions of IPC (Indian Penal Code) related to negligence,” added Mehta.
