It’s not easy to repair the 60-year-old system left behind by the previous government, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has said in a report by The Star. After all, she said the new government is going to need time to do it.

For 60 years, Malaysia was administered by the Barisan Nasional government and when Pakatan Harapan took over, the country was already burdened with huge debts, she said when speaking at the “An evening with the Deputy Prime Minister” event yesterday (3 March).

“For 60 years, there was no change in the government. When we took over, we do not have enough funds. This is a fact… if we don’t pay the debts, our country will head towards bankruptcy. We (Pakatan government) are only eight months old, it is not easy to repair an old system. This is not an excuse,” the Deputy Prime Minister lamented.

“We make efforts by holding meetings, setting up committees, on how we can reduce the living cost that we feel is burdening the people,” she details their work over the previous months.

Dr Wan Azizah also admits the new government’s flaws, specifically their mostly-green cabinet without practical experience in administrating a nation.

“The government has its weaknesses. I admit we are not perfect… our Cabinet members are new, except for (Prime Minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and (Home Minister) Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. (Finance Minister) Lim Guan Eng and (Economic Affairs Minister) Datuk Seri Azmin Ali have experience administering a state.”

“Other than them, they are all new faces. We have to be realistic. However, we will try to rectify the situation,” she stated.

Also present at the event were Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, Permatang Pauh Member of Parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar and Seberang Jaya Assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin.

Netizens on Facebook were divided after hearing her statements, with some being more critical about the recent mishaps and lack of progress.

Others were upset at how the blame was laid on the BN administration.

However, there were still many hopefuls who believe in the government to improve the state of the country.

Indeed, it can’t be easy to undo decades of damage within mere months. Regardless, we all belong as one nation, so we too wish our government the best of luck in their mission!
