Namewee, a local musician and filmmaker, has been known to stir the occasional controversy at least once every year.
Now, with his latest Chinese New Year music video celebrating the upcoming year of the dog, he has once again come under fire, and even got the attention of our Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Zahid Ahmad Hamidi.
The music video titled “Like A Dog” shows the musician sitting in a chair surrounded by backup dancers dressed in dog masks and performing sexually suggestive acts.

According to Free Malaysia Today, the song itself is about the different barks of dogs from countries all over the world. However, the most controversial part is when he gets to Malaysia, he sings that dogs go “mari mari, wang wang” (come come, money money). Plus, the entire video is shot just behind the Perdana Putra Building in Putrajaya, where the Prime Minister’s office is!
In response to this, our Deputy Prime Minister reminded the musician not to cross the line, according to Malay Mail Online. He stated,
“The person has escaped from many (lawful) actions before.”
“This is not a warning. I just want to say that actions will be taken, because when that person managed to escape the law previously, it does not mean that person can escape forever.”

On top of that, Datuk Zahid Hamidi also said he was concerned over “lone wolves” taking the law into their own hands when reacting to provocative actions, saying,
“Don’t blame others then, because it is that person who asked for it, upon himself.”
“Our country is one that prioritises harmony. Harmony has to be translated by respecting religious differences. Difference in culture and race.”
