A corn vendor in Sepang recently made headlines after he put up a sign at his stall that included a racial slur that was written on a piece of cardboard.

The sign sparked backlash, leading the vendor to speak out and apologise, saying he never meant to insult Malaysian Indians.

Dr. Akmal Saleh wasn’t having it

Following the controversy, UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr. Akmal Saleh voiced his concerns about the issue, stating that an apology alone isn’t enough.

In a Facebook post, he emphasised that if an issue involves insulting different races, legal action should be taken instead of just ending with an apology.

He wrote,

“I ask that actions like this, which insult different races, be dealt with through legal action and not just end with an apology.”

“Legal action must be taken to serve as a lesson”

Dr. Akmal stressed that legal action has to be taken against anyone to set an example, no matter who the person is.

“No matter who the perpetrator is, legal action must be taken to serve as a lesson to others,” he explained.

He explained that if the issue becomes a common thing, people will start getting away with it more easily.

“If we don’t, this culture of doing something first and then apologising will just spread, and these people will keep getting away with it!”
