Over the past week or so, a proposed guideline for Muslims attending non-Muslim events in Malaysia drew controversy after it was revealed by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.
The proposal has apparently since been dropped, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announcing on Friday (7 Friday) that such a guideline is unnecessary as “Muslims already know the boundaries”.

Following this, Umno Youth Chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh has also given his two cents on the matter by refuting Anwar’s statement and stressing that the proposed guideline is necessary.
Taking to his official Facebook page, Akmal asserted that the guideline for Muslims attending non-Muslim events is meant to be a source of reference as not everyone has the same level of knowledge and understanding.
He further asserted that creating a guideline doesn’t mean that Muslims don’t know the rules and boundaries, but it’s meant to serve as a reminder in case they forgot.
Akmal, who is also the assemblyperson for Merlimau, then warned non-Muslims not to meddle in the matters of Islam, saying,
“The guideline is meant for Muslims and will only apply to Muslims, so non-Muslims don’t have to interfere! Simple as that.”

Besides that, the Umno Youth Chief also provided an analogy comparing the guideline with traffic rules, especially on drunk driving.
He asserted,
“It’s the same as guidelines on traffic rules. Many possess driving licenses but don’t know the existing traffic laws. In fact, they are still those that drive while intoxicated.”
