A car caught fire on December 30, causing severe traffic congestion that stretched over 5km from Batu Kawan to Batu Maung in Penang.

Berita Harian reported that the luxury car, with a male driver and a female passenger, narrowly escaped death after losing control of the vehicle, reportedly after hitting a discarded car battery.

No one was injured

The incident happened when a car battery was left by the roadside at Kilometer 18 of the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge (JSAHMS).

Barat Daya District Police Chief, ACP Sazalee Adam, said the driver was able to bring the car to a stop on the left side of the road, and thankfully, no one was injured, as reported by BERNAMA.

“No casualties were reported, and the firefighters were able to put out the fire, although there was some congestion,” he explained.

Victims hit the car battery before veering off

Operations Commander from the Bayan Baru Fire and Rescue Station (BBP), Mohd Firdaus Mohd Saad, said a team of 12 personnel, with help from BBP Batu Kawan, was sent to the scene right after they got the call at 3:18 PM.

“When they arrived, the two victims, who were in their 20s, had managed to escape safely. The rescue team took about 15 minutes to put out the fire and get it under control,” he added.

Sazalee Adam also confirmed that the vehicle is believed to have hit a car battery left by the roadside before it veered off and caught fire.
