This is a welcome piece of news for school teachers! Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said that the second wave of Malaysia Education Quality Standard (SKPMg2) auditing exercise will be suspended, effective immediately. This audit exercise had previously been a burden on school teachers as it involved a lot of paperwork that was often confusing.

However, the training and guidance sessions for SKPMg2, which are meant to to improve the school management and upgrade the education level in schools, will still continue, NST reported. SKPMg2 had been implemented since March 2017 where it is a self-assessment tool for more systematic management and help schools determine their strengths and weaknesses for improvement.

Dr Mazslee explained, “The auditing process to verify the SKPMg2 data input for 2017 has triggered misunderstanding and ‘restlessness’ among teachers. I want the teachers’ burden to be reduced so that they can focus their efforts on educating students.”

This exercise had caused much confusion as school authorities were unsure about the documents that needed to be audited by the Inspectorate and Quality Assurance Council, which had resulted in lots of unnecessary paperwork. Hence, the Education Ministry had decided that they would suspend this audit as they want teachers to focus on delivering high quality education to students. Fret not, they will still improve the education system!

Before this, the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) had pushed for the SKPMg2 issue to be resolved as they had received numerous complaints from teachers.

Hopefully there will be more reforms to make Malaysia’s education system better!
