Effective Today, Pasir Gudang Has Been Upgraded To ‘Bandaraya’ Status!

An economic hub for the state of Johor, Pasir Gudang has finally gotten a city status that it has long deserved!

The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar today consented to the upgrading of Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (MPPG) to the city-status of Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG).

As reported by National News Agency Bernama, Johor Menteri Besar, Datuk Ir Hasni Mohammad confirmed this status upgrade to reporters following a meeting with the MBPG staff at Kota Iskandar today. Hasni Mohammad also handed over the instrument of proclamation to city-status to Pasir Gudang mayor, Asman Shah Abdul Rahman.

The Johor Menteri Besar commented that given the rapid development of Pasir Gudang, it is appropriate for it to be accorded a city status. In fact, Pasir Gudang economic status is quite impressive, including:

  • The city have two international ports.
  • It has grown to become an industrial city thanks to these ports.
  • The city have comprehensive infrastructure that prioritises the people’s well-being.
  • There are 90,758 property holdings in the city, with estimated revenue of RM127.2 million per year.
  • Last year, the city municipal council collected RM182.7 million in revenue.

Currently, MBPG’s jurisdiction covers an area of 35.956 hectares, encompassing Mukim Tiram and Mukim Plentong. The city has a population of 433,868 people. With this upgrade, Pasir Gudang becomes Johor’s third area to be accorded city-status after Johor Bahru and Iskandar Puteri.

Congratulations Pasir Gudang and let’s hope the city continue to strive to become one of Malaysia’s most modern cities!
