The prestigious Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition 2025, Malaysia’s longest-running and most anticipated English essay challenge, proudly marks its 12th year, reigniting its mission to discover and nurture the country’s brightest young minds.

A collaborative initiative by Sunway College and the Oxford and Cambridge Society Malaysia, the competition reflects a shared commitment to advancing education in Malaysia by empowering students to think critically, express originality, and demonstrate academic-level writing in English.

Navin Nesan Sivanesan, a 15 year old participant from SMK Sultan Abdul Samad, shared his experience, stating, “The Sunway Oxbridge Essay 2025 was a mind-expanding adventure. From writing to my future self to debating whether beauty is power, every question pushed me to think deeper and write more boldly. Compared to other contests, this one truly sparked my creativity. It was fun, inspiring, and full of ‘a-ha!’ moments.”

Having previously won a Silver medal in the Future Intelligence Student Olympiad 2025 and the 2025 International Innovation and Invention Competition, Navin found that the Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition set a new benchmark for creativity and critical thinking among young writers like him.

This year, students were encouraged to explore bold keywords like ‘Peculiar,’ ‘Introspective,’ ‘Social Awareness,’ and ‘Self-Development,’ compelling them to reflect on global challenges through a local lens. The competition posed thought-provoking questions that not only tested writing ability, but challenged students to examine their values, voice, and vision for the future.

Participating students were divided into Category A (Form 1 to 3 students) and Category B (Form 4 and 5 students). Spanning eight states nationwide—Selangor, Sarawak, Perak, Johor Bahru, Melaka, Penang, Pahang, and Sabah—the event attracted 1,243 enthusiastic participants, reflecting strong interest and engagement. Since its inception in 2014, the competition has reached over 30,000 students.

Professor Cheng Mien Wee, Executive Director of Sunway International Schools and Director of Pre-University Studies at Sunway College, remarked: “It is incredibly inspiring to see young Malaysians rise to the challenge of expressing complex ideas with clarity and purpose. This competition gives them a voice and the confidence to use it. We are proud to support a platform that empowers the youth.”

A total of 20 winners—10 from each category—will be selected in July, with prizes including up to RM142,000 in Sunway bursaries* and RM25,000 worth of rewards, underscoring Sunway’s dedication to shaping the next generation of Malaysian changemakers. The impact goes far beyond the numbers as these rewards create real opportunities for students to further their education in an environment that values growth, curiosity, and purpose.

The Sunway-Oxbridge Essay Competition continues to provide a national platform for young Malaysians to sharpen their thinking and contribute meaningfully to conversations that shape the future.
