Former Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin today successfully reduced the damages she has to pay her former political party PKR to RM100,000.

This is after PKR sued her for RM10 million for breaching a bond with the party signed before the 14th General Election (GE14).

Court of Appeal reduces the damages Zuraida had to pay PKR from RM10 million to RM100,000

Previously, Zuraida was ordered by the High Court in June last year to pay RM10 million to PKR for defecting from the party following 2020’s infamous Sheraton Move.

However, the Court of Appeal found the RM10 million amount to be “unreasonable” and reduced it to RM100,000.

As reported by Harian Metro, a three-judge panel of the Appellate Court led by Justice See Mee Chun ruled that Zuraida was indeed liable for the bond breach with the party but found that the RM10 million amount in damages granted by the High Court was unreasonable and extravagant.

Zuraida plans to pay in RM1 banknotes only

Following the decision, Harian Metro quoted Zuraida as saying that she plans to pay the reduced amount with RM1 banknotes.

She asserted,

“Even though the (PKR) have become the Government, they still want to collect ‘donations’, so I’ll give it to them. If it was up to me, I wouldn’t pay even RM1,”

Zuraida, who is also PKR’s former vice president, added that the civil suit against her was a lesson to all political parties that want to place a bond with their members for loyalty.

The former Minister said that loyalty shouldn’t be placed on a party but on the struggles they’re fighting for.
