Inviting former US President Donald Trump to the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit is a strategic move that gives member countries a chance to speak openly about their support for Palestine, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He explained that Trump’s presence creates a rare opportunity for ASEAN leaders to directly share their views, especially their strong backing for Palestine and their frustration with how some nations have handled the issue.

“Some people have asked why we didn’t just skip inviting him to send a stronger message,” Fahmi said.
“Sure, we could have easily chosen to boycott, but the Prime Minister believes in dialogue — even with those we disagree with.”

Speaking after a visit to the Sumud Nusantara Operations Centre, Fahmi said the timing of Trump’s visit couldn’t be better. With global opinion shifting and more countries standing up for Palestine, the summit offers a platform for honest conversations, not just from Malaysia, but from other ASEAN nations too.
He pointed to recent fiery debates at the United Nations General Assembly, where countries have been pushing not just for a ceasefire, but for an end to the war in Gaza.
“This is the right moment to engage,” he said. “It’s not just about making our stance clear — it’s about giving others the chance to do the same.”

On Saturday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim responded to critics questioning Trump’s invitation, saying Malaysia would continue to speak out for Palestine, firmly, but strategically.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently called for the government to cancel its invitation to Trump and accused him and the US of being key players in Israel’s genocide in Palestine.
Besides Trump, leaders from Asia, Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Canada are also expected to attend the summit in Kuala Lumpur.
