The Communications and Digital Ministry (KKD) recently revealed that the 5G network coverage in Malaysia’s populated areas is now at 66.8%, making our nation set to achieve its target of 80% coverage by the end of the year.

However, despite the high nationwide coverage, our 5G network is not being fully utilised by the population. In fact, according to KKD Minister Fahmi Fadzil, the 5G network usage is now only at a meagre 4.2%.

Taking to Facebook, Fahmi said that among the reasons for low 5G network usage in our country include the prices of 5G smartphones that are not affordable. Hence, that’s why the government recently launched the 5G RAHMAH package that allows eligible Malaysians to purchase a 5G-enabled smartphone at a low price.

The low 5G network usage was among the matters discussed by the KKD Minister when he visited Samsung Headquarters in South Korea and met with Samsung Electronics Mobile Experience Business President TM Roh and Samsung Electronics Network Business President Woojune Kim.

In the meeting, Fahmi proposed a potential collaboration with Samsung for more affordable 5G devices for the benefit of Malaysians. For example, the aforementioned 5G RAHMAH Package allows eligible Malaysians to purchase an RM949 Samsung 5G smartphone at just RM240.

Saying that the package is just the beginning, the KKD Minister hoped for closer cooperation between KKD and telco companies with Samsung so that the price of 5G devices could be more affordable in our country.
