The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been asked not to proceed with its directive requiring all internet service providers (ISPs) in Malaysia to implement Domain Name System (DNS) redirection.

In an official statement on his X post today, @fadmi_fadzil, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the MCMC should continue holding engagement sessions with all stakeholders.

“Cybercrime issues, including access to gambling, prostitution and pornography websites, are extremely concerning and we need comprehensive solutions for this.”

Fahmi assured Malaysians that the government will not compromise to ensure online safety for Malaysians, especially children and families.

However, after considering the feedback from MCMC’s engagement sessions and the public, Fahmi said he had asked MCMC not to continue implementing the DNS redirection method.

Some internet users took to social media to complain that the DNS redirection blocked their access to a game site and prevented them from downloading VPN (virtual private network) applications. The complaint also led to an online petition against the DNS redirection.

Fahmi previously defended the plan, saying it was intended to prevent access to harmful sites, especially porn and online gambling.

Fahmi mentioned that the MCMC will continue to talk to all stakeholders to obtain more views and suggestions on how to achieve the objective of safe internet surfing.
