Hanis Onn’s suspension over her racial slur may be too harsh for some, but former Minister of Sports and Youth, Faizal Azumu does not think that way.

In fact, he supports the decision to suspend the national hockey player from representing the country and wants Hanis to be responsible for her comment.

In a statement posted on his Facebook yesterday (February 10), Faizal “approves” the suspension and said,

“Racism has no place in a multi-racial country like Malaysia.”

He added that respect towards each other is one of the most important foundations in society, and as a national hockey player, Hanis should be responsible for her mistake.

Faizal also highlighted that the “lifespan” of the career of an athlete is usually short, and expressed his hope to see Hanis getting support from the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) and the Selangor State Sports Council (MSN).

“Divisive comments are going on a rampage”

In the meantime, the former Minister of Sports & Youth took the opportunity to remind others about the widespread divisive comments on social media.

“As Malaysians, we all have a part to play in respecting each other, regardless of your race, religion, and political background. Take Hanis’ issue as a reminder for all of us,” he explained.

On the other hand, Hanis Onn stated that she accepts the punishment with an open heart, and assured the people that she will take this experience as a stern reminder and lesson for herself, as reported by Berita Harian.

If Hanis wishes to, Hannah Yeoh confirmed that the national hockey player can file an appeal for her punishment to MSN which may eventually allow her to represent the country in the upcoming SEA Games in Cambodia.

While everyone has freedom of speech, we should all remember to be careful when leaving comments on social media. Regardless, do you agree with Faizal’s take on this matter?
