Earlier in March, a supermarket in Thailand went viral for its simple, environmentally-friendly banana leaf packaging for its fresh products.
Now, it looks like loads of supermarkets in Vietnam are also adopting this packaging for its vegetables!

According to Tuoi Tre News, major supermarket chains like Ho Chi Minh city’s Lotte Mart and Saigon Co.op have been adopting this method. Saigon Co.op revealed plans to gradually replace their biodegradable wraps with banana leaves across Co.opmart supermarkets, Co.op Xtra hypermarkets, Co.op Food stores, and Co.op Smiles convenience stores.
On top of that, the Big C supermarket chain has also implemented this new packaging method across outlets in central and southern Vietnamese localities as of 3rd April. Prior to this, Big C has already been using eco-friendly packaging made with corn powder.

According to Vice News, a representative from Lotte Mart stated that while they are still in the testing phase for this new biodegradable packaging, they do plan to implement this nationwide soon.
News of this comes in light of the fact that Vietnam was ranked the fourth biggest producer of plastic waste that gets dumped in the ocean.
Well, let’s hope that Malaysia’s supermarket chains also follow suit and jump on the environmentally-friendly bandwagon!
