The government has decided to limit foreign workers to work only under three sectors. This decision is to ensure that Malaysians can regain employment after the economic downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the Movement Control Order (MCO) afterwards.

According to Free Malaysia Today, Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Human Resource Awang Solahudin told the Parliament on 29th July 2020 that foreign workers can now only be employed in the construction sector, the agricultural sector and the plantation sector. This is part of the government’s effort to reduce the unemployment rate among Malaysians.

“Only these three sectors are allowed to employ foreign workers, the other sectors we want to fill up with local workers. This will be part of our guidelines to reduce the foreign worker intake,” he added.

Awang also said that some sectors were still paying a minimum wage of RM1,100 despite the regulated sum of RM1,200, adding that a bill will be tabled to standardise the payment.
