When you’re walking in the streets, you might chance upon people begging for money, especially in high-traffic areas.
Recently, the Immigration Department managed to detain 8 foreigners begging on Bukit Bintang’s streets.
According to their statement on Facebook, it is said that they received complaints from the public, and after observing them, 18 officers went to the Bukit Bintang area for the operation on October 1.
8 foreigners were detained during the operation: 1 male and 1 female Chinese national, 3 Pakistani females, 1 Jordan female, 1 Pakistani female child, and a boy from 1 Jordan. Their ages ranged from 8 months to 78 years old.
During the operation, it was noted that one of the foreigners pretended to be in pain, fainted, and tried to ran away when an officer tried to help them.
The Chinese national also pretended to be a Muslim woman by wearing the niqab. Meanwhile, the other women were also wearing niqabs and were using the children to get sympathy from the public so that they would donate money to them.
The immigration department mentioned that the foreigners had committed wrongdoings under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) for not having identification documents and staying over the allowed period of time. As of now, they are placed at the Semenyih Immigration Depot for further investigations.
The department also urged locals to give them information on foreigners who are going against the law so that actions can be taken.
