One of the key highlights in PMX’s recent special announcement was the reduction in the RON95 petrol price. By the end of September, the price will be set at RM1.99 per litre, down from the previous RM2.05 per litre.

Speaking at an event today (July 27) in Muar, Johor, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim reiterated that the RM1.99 price is exclusively for Malaysians and not applicable to foreigners.

For non-locals, including Singaporeans, petrol will be sold at market rates, estimated between RM2.50 and RM2.60 per litre. The Prime Minister emphasised that this pricing difference is not a form of discrimination, but rather a measure to safeguard the welfare of Malaysians.

He explained that the move is crucial to ensure that substantial government subsidies benefit only the local population, in line with the Civil Government’s approach that prioritises social justice. Anwar also responded to criticism from an opposition leader in Johor who allegedly condemned the decision to limit subsidies to Malaysians.

And Anwar had his reasons.

“I don’t understand. I am the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Foreigners don’t pay taxes like Malaysians do. In which country do foreigners receive subsidies like Malaysians? My first responsibility is to look after Malaysians.”

Anwar also reminded Malaysians that fuel prices in the country are among the lowest in the region, and stressed that the government does not raise oil prices arbitrarily.

“If you don’t believe me, look at the oil prices in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, all of which are much higher. We can still afford to offer RM1.99 to the people. That is my responsibility.”

He added that savings from subsidy rationalisation will be channelled into strengthening welfare programmes, rural development, and gradually increasing the minimum wage, including for public sector employees and those in government-linked companies.
