If you are planning to fly to Bangkok this May, then you better be prepared for some heavy rain! According to Bangkok Post, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has predicted that citizens need to brace themselves for some wet weather at the moment.

After TMD issued the warnings that there will be heavy rains and thunderstorms, Thai authorities have started to take flooding precautions. Narong Ruangsri, Bangkok’s deputy director of the department of drainage and sewerage said that they have instructed City Hall workers to step up preparations.

Roadside ditches and drains will be cleaned and unblocked to allow rainwater to flow to natural watercourses such as the Chao Phraya river. Construction on underground flood control in various locations such as Song Sawat, Yaowarat, Charoen Krung, Narathiwat Ratchanakharin and Suan Phlu Roads have been hastened to minimise the risk of flash floods.

Narong also advised the public not to litter as the rubbish could lead to blockages that will obstruct the flow of water. That’s when flash floods happen!

TMD explained that May is the transitioning period from summer to rainy seasons, so during the first half of the month, there will be thunderstorms while there will be abundant rainfall during the second half of the month. In addition, people in central and northern Thailand, including Bangkok, can expect to see more wet days starting the course of this whole week as there are strong winds from China.

Get ready to bring out those umbrellas and raincoats if you’re heading to Bangkok!
