Since Kylie Jenner’s thick, luscious lips became so iconic in recent years, many ladies have been going for lip augmentation procedures such as lip fillers and implants in beauty clinics to get a plumper pout.
If they aren’t able to afford the procedure, they’d look for alternative non-surgical ways to enlarge their puckers such as using lip liners to over-line the lips to create the appearance of fuller puckers or even doing the ridiculous shot glass challenge.
The shot glass challenge is where people would pucker their lips inside a shot glass, and then suck the air out before leaving it on for a few minutes and voilà, one can have thick lips like Kylie Jenner!
Unfortunately, this challenge is extremely damaging to the lips. In a report by Global News, doctors have advised against the challenge as it can leave bruises, blisters and even lead to infection.
Of course, too many people still do the challenge for fun anyway while some people actually incorporate this into their makeup routine.
Well, times are a changing though, because it seems like the à la Kylie lip trend is phasing out while thinner ‘Caucasian’ lips seem to be the new ‘it’ look, as reported by Nextshark.
As usual, Asian women and men tend to copy whatever that’s ‘in’ in the Western fashion and beauty world. Nextshark reported that lip reduction surgery is currently super popular as Asians try to mimic a slimmer silhouette on their mouths.
Apparently, South Koreans tend to get lip reduction surgery for a thin and curved look for about KRW2,200,000 to KRW11,000,000 (approx. RM7,540 to RM41,470).
The procedure lasts for about 15 to 30 minutes where the inner part of the upper lip is sliced and then stitched up again to create a new lip line. Meanwhile, the overall size of lips is reduced by pulling in the lip underneath inside the mouth. Patients can then remove the stitches after a week.
A dermatologist from Thailand, Dr Nuttae Nuttapon, believes that the trend is popular due to Asians having a stronger preference for more Westernised features, saying,
“Asian men and women typically prefer Caucasian facial features, which are narrower cheekbones, deeper eye sockets and thinner lips.”
Besides the obvious plastic surgery, there are many other ‘beauty procedures’ available today too. More people are injecting things into their faces for smoother/fairer/tighter skin, getting eyebrow tattoos, and much more.
The scariest thing is how these beauty trends change so quickly, yet there are people who are willing to go through such major transformations as if it were as easy as changing clothes!
Would you reduce the size of your lips (or go under the knife in general) just to keep up with the trends? What’s your take on this? Let us know in the comments!
