Previously, we shared how Penang was named the 2nd best place in Southeast Asia for solo travel by global travel guidebook publisher Lonely Planet.

Well, Malaysia’s Pearl of the Orient was also featured favourably in another Lonely Planet travel ranking recently, whereby Penang was named the 6th best place to visit in Southeast Asiathe only Malaysian location that made it to the list.

However, the ranking included several rather ‘interesting’ tips for female travellers visiting the state, including how women allegedly may not be allowed to enter government buildings without wearing a head scarf or sarong.

As for the ranking itself, the Philippines’ Siargao was named the best place to visit in the region followed by Amed in Bali, Indonesia.

Making up the top 7 are Vietnam’s Cao Bang in 3rd, Thailand’s Khao Sok National Park in 4th, Laos’ Luang Prabang in 5th, Penang in 6th and Indonesia’s Gili Air in 7th.

Elaborating on Penang’s 6th place in the ranking, Lonely Planet said that the state is the best Southeast Asian place for history and culture.

Furthermore, the ranking touted the Penang as a vibrant mosaic of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures, all of which are reflected in its food, architecture and traditions.

However, in the ‘Planning tip’ section, the travel guidebook publisher advised that as a general rule, it’s wise for “female travellers to cover their shoulders, chest and knees”.

Moreover, Lonely Planet further claimed that while most sites do not require this, women may need to “bring a head scarf or sarong” to enter certain religious or government buildings.

While the article didn’t mention the reason behind the advice, it may be in reference to several instances in the past such as this where Malaysians were denied entry into hospitals and other government premises for not following the dress code.
