The government is considering the possibility of appointing police officers and other enforcement agencies in Light Rail Transits (LRT) to ensure that people are practicing social distancing in public transportations.

This suggestion was discussed by Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Yaakob during a press conference today (16 April) after an MCO related meeting in Putrajaya.

“One’s attitude and discipline plays a big part when it comes to the practice of social distancing in public areas including LRT services,” stated Datuk Seri Ismail.

According to the Senior Minister, social distancing is important because it affects the surrounding people’s health and their security as well.

“Discipline is our responsibility. If there are any social distancing problems in LRT and Mass Transportation System (MRT), this issue will be discussed further with PDRM and other enforcement agencies in order to manage the situation,” said Datuk Seri Ismail, reported Berita Harian.

He also further explained that there were public transportation users who expressed their concerns on social media stating that there is no social distancing in LRT.

Public should take note that this is merely a suggestion for now and it is not confirmed yet. Social distancing is very important to break the chains of Covid-19 infections.

Experts recommend social distancing as one of the most effective ways to lower the risk of getting infected by Covid-19. The Health Ministry has also included social distancing as part of their guidelines. This shows how important it is during these critical times.
