These days, whenever we go walk into a hypermarket or even a nasi campur stall, we can see QR codes arranged beautifully on the counter for us to pay with our preferred e-wallet. There’s no running away from the way of cashless payment as it is actually very beneficial to us all.
Knowing this, the government has decided to test out an e-wallet system and software with other e-wallet providers like Touch ‘n Go eWallet, Grab, Boost and many more, to explore more ways on how the cashless payment ecosystem can be beneficial for the rakyat.
According to Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, as reported by Malay Mail, the new e-wallet system will be called e-Tunai Rakyat. He explained that the system will be in line with the government plan to distribute a one-off RM30 e-credit to Malaysian e-wallet users who are eligible for the initiative. which can be claimed from 1st January to 29th February 2020. He elaborated,
“Khazanah Nasional Bhd will be making an announcement on the participating e-wallet providers and if the allocation is fully claimed and has successfully boosted spending, the ministry will consider increasing the amount.”
So who will be eligible to claim the e-Tunai Rakyat? Well, if you are a Malaysian, age 18 and above in 2020 with an annual income that is lower than RM100,000, then you will be eligible for it. The only thing you need to do is get your identity verified by participating e-wallet providers of your choice.
The e-Tunai Rakyat is part of the government’s plan to motivate the public, small business and retail merchants to start transacting digitally. Are you an e-wallet user and how many times in a week that you pay for your purchases digitally? Share with us your thoughts in the comment section below.
