Following the incident where a young Malaysian specialist doctor allegedly took her own life due to workplace bullying at the Sabah hospital where she worked, many are baffled by the fact that such a tragic thing can happen even to those working to improve our healthcare system.

Now, the Ministry of Health (MOH) is being called on to do something about this before we lose more bright Malaysians to bullying.

Medical officers’ non-governmental organization (NGO), Hartal Doktor Kontrak took to their X page to insist MOH implement anti-bullying policies to disallow such incidents from happening again.

They wrote, “Hartal Doktor Kontrak extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Dr Tay Tien Yaa, whose tragic passing has profoundly impacted the medical community.”

“Despite the findings released by the Ministry of Health (MOH) task force on workplace bullying, the tragic circumstances surrounding Dr Tay’s death highlights the need for further, more decisive action to address this critical issue within Malausia’s healthcare system.”

In regards to the potential anti-bullying policies they’re requesting, Hartal Doktor Kontrak hopes that MOH will implement an accessible reporting system and hold bullies accountable for their actions.

“We call for immediate implementation of actionable reforms, including establishing a transparent, independent and accessible reporting system for all healthcare workers. There must be concrete steps to enforce anti-bullying policies and hold those responsible for workplace harassment accountable, regardless of their position within the hierarchy,”

“In addition to policy reforms, there must be a stronger focus on the mental health of healthcare workers. Accessible mental health support services should be made available to all healthcare professionals, particularly those working in high-stress or remote environments,” they explained.

Ultimately, this incident cannot be taken lightly and must not go in vain.

“Dr. Tay’s death serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need for reforms to address chronic understaffing and overburdening, which exacerbate stress and mental health concerns. The time for action is now,”

“We urge the Ministry of Health to swiftly implement the necessary changes to protect healthcare workers from further harm and ensure that no life is lost to workplace bullying again,” Hartal Doktor Kontrak added.

It is truly saddening to know that those doing their level best to protect us from sickness and disease are treated with such disregard by the authorities and the people who are meant to champion them.
