Malaysia recorded a whopping 7,289 new Covid-19 cases today (25 May) with Selangor reaching an all-time high of 2,642 cases.

However, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah warns Malaysians that the worst is yet to come.

On his official Twitter account, he said that Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 cases are following an exponential trend with the rise of cases starting on 1 April 2021.

He said that there is a possibility of a “vertical surge” and that we need to “prepare for the worst”.

“Please help us by staying at home. Only together can we break the chain of infection,” he said.

Dr Noor Hisham added that neglecting facts and data is not going to help, nor is giving excuses not to stay home.

“If you have work or an urgent matter to attend to, please comply with all standard operating procedures (SOP).”

As of 23 May, the infectivity rate in the country stood at 1.21, which means that one person infected with Covid-19 is able to spread the virus to 1.21 other people. This also means that daily cases could hit up to 9,000 by June if there is non-compliance to SOPs.
