Earning just RM2,000 a month, a Malaysian man is considering a RM20,000 personal loan from the bank to finance his wedding.

While many approach wedding preparations with excitement, the man confessed he feels immense pressure, particularly after his girlfriend’s family rejected the idea of a small wedding. With his modest income and the potential loan repayments that could last for years, something else is weighing heavily on him.

At 30, the man admitted he has no savings at all, making the preparations a huge burden

He stated that his girlfriend’s family rejected a smaller ceremony, fearing judgment from others and the embarrassment it might bring. Posting on Threads, he lamented the thought of taking a personal loan, admitting he had exhausted all other options for financing the wedding.

Start a business? Too late for that.

“Even financial advisors on YouTube are against the idea of taking a personal loan for a wedding. I don’t think starting a business now is a good idea. What should I do?”

In his post, he also said he believed he wasn’t the only soul “tormented” by a similar situation, adding that he was representing “other fallen brothers” who are stuck in the same predicament.

One of the financial advisors on YouTube, @financialfaiz, who was mentioned in the post, explained what he thought was even sillier.

“It would be even dumber to listen to others about their embarrassment, especially when you know you cannot afford to fund the wedding.”

“Many got married during the MCO, and no one cared about that. You could spend only RM5,000 at a restaurant for an intimate wedding while getting to know the guests,” he added.

To those who are married: What was your budget, and how did you manage to cope financially?
