Are you looking for a reason to open up a bottle of wine? Well, you have one now!
Scientists from Washington State University have found that a chemical compound in red wine called resveratrol can convert excess white fat to calorie-burning beige fat, which could help you lose weight. Yup, it’s true!
Resveratrol is a type of antioxidant that can be found in most fruit, but it’s particularly high in blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, and apples.
“Polyphenols in fruit, including resveratrol, increase gene expression that enhances the oxidation of dietary fats so the body won’t be overloaded. They convert white fat into beige fat that burns lipids off as heat,” professor of animal sciences Min Du said.
In fact, one of his experiments showed that mice fed with a diet containing 0.1 per cent of resveratrol were able to transform the excess white fat into the energy-burning beige fat, which is the reason why resveratrol may be used in obesity treatment in the future.
For your information, white fat is converted into ‘obesity-fighting’ beige fat through a process called ‘browning’.
“Resveratrol can enhance this conversion of white fat to beige fat and when you have high rates of browning, it can partially prevent obesity,” Min Du added.
To reap the full benefit of resveratrol from fruits, you are recommended to consume whole fruits as many polyphenols like resveratrol get filtered out during the winemaking process. Not to mention, fruits are rich in fiber as well!
However, if washing and peeling fruits are too much of a hassle, you can always go with a glass (or two) of wine in the evening or before you go to bed. That’s because resveratrol-rich wine can keep you fuller and curb your cravings at night time, thus preventing snacking and binge eating.
So, if you know someone who loves drinking wine, why not share this article with them? Mind you, it’s a glass or two, not a bottle yea! Drink responsibly!
