Ever since mandatory mask-wearing was implemented beginning 1st August, Malaysians have started becoming more consciously compliant when they leave their house.

However, there are still some Malaysians who chose to ignore these instructions and, well, they’ve faced the consequences by receiving a fine of RM1,000. But some Malaysians out there are still confused about where and when you should be wearing your masks.

In his press conference, Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, clarified that face masks are mandatory when you’re in a crowded area like buses, taxis, LRT, MRT, KTM, e-hailing rides and even crowded public places.

 The crowded public places include:

  • Public markets
  • Pasar Tani
  • Night markets (pasar malam)
  • Supermarkets
  • Tourist spots
  • Cinemas

Here’s where  you don’t need to be wearing a mask at all:

  • Inside your own houses
  • Inside your own cars

You also don’t need to be wearing a mask when you’re exercising or doing any other heavy physical activity. Children under the age of two also don’t need to be wearing a mask.

If the area which is usually crowded but empty when you’re visiting, then you don’t need to wear a mask. Over the weekend, there were Malaysians who were fined for not wearing masks in their own cars.

To rectify this, the minister announced that whoever that was fined for not wearing a mask in their cars, don’t need to pay the fines.

The war against the pandemic isn’t behind us.  When our frontliners can wear a mask for countless hours without complaining, we can surely do so for a few hours. At the end of the day, wearing masks and maintaining physical distancing is WAY cheaper than a RM1,000 fine!
