It’s no secret that plenty of us rely on our phones in almost every context. For example, if we’re driving in a relatively confusing or deserted area and want to navigate our way through, we’ll obviously have to rely on GPS apps like Waze or Google Maps. However, if you’re not careful, you could get fined if you’re caught with your hands on your phone while driving!
According to the New Straits Times, a driver in Subang Jaya was recently holding his phone and using the Waze app while driving along Jalan Puchong Perdana. However, he was soon given a traffic summon.

The driver then took to social media, claiming that he was issued a fine for using Waze while driving. However, Subang Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Azlin Sadari clarified this claim, saying that he was actually summoned for holding his phone while driving. He told the daily,
“I have checked the issue. The summons was issued because the man was holding his smartphone while driving. It was not because he was using Waze or other phone applications.”
However, the district police chief added that it’s actually not an offence if drivers used their phones while they were either placed on the dashboard or fixed to a car mobile holder.

According to Rule 17A of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, drivers using their mobile phones while driving can be slapped with a fine of up to RM300. Don’t play-play, ah!
So, remember to pay attention to the road and practise caution if you plan on using your phone while driving (perhaps invest in a good phone holder for your car to avoid trouble with the cops!). Drive safe, y’all!
