“We should return a lost wallet to its owner.” Remember our standard answer when answering exam questions back then? Not many can do the same when they’re out in society as adults.
A Malaysian man, however, stuck to the answer when he found a wallet with SGD428. The man could’ve been RM1,522 richer but he decided to return the money to whom it belongs. He sought help from netizens in locating the owner of the lost wallet and it didn’t take him that long to find the lucky owner.
The man who found the wallet, Zimmy had zero intention of keeping the money, and he happily returned the wallet to its owner, who happened to be someone from the Malaysian cross-border community, just like Zimmy
According to China Press, Zimmy found the wallet at Changi Business Park on February 21 around 9 pm, and he decided to keep it with him first.
“I was rushing back to JB. When I reached home, I found cash and the owner’s documents, including his work pass.”
Thanks to the power of social media, his posting in the FB group Malaysia-Singapore Border Crossers(MSBC) 马新过境者 took him only about 30 minutes to locate the owner of the wallet.
Reward? No, thank you
Zimmy revealed that the owner, Mr Wang offered him some money as a reward. Zimmy, who genuinely wanted the owner to “reunite” with his lost wallet politely declined the monetary reward.
However, he eventually accepted SGD2 (approximately RM7) because he didn’t want Wang to feel disappointed.
“He offered me too much, and I coudn’t take it. I accepted the SGD2. Enough for me to get a glass of Teh Tarik.”
SGD428 is a lot when converted to MYR. Zimmy, however, was not tempted to make himself richer. And who knew Wang could’ve needed the money for an emergency.
