Yesterday (24 October), we shared the statement issued by convicted former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in which he apologised unreservedly to the Malaysian people over the 1MDB debacle.
Today, current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has responded to Najib’s statement.
Anwar welcomes Najib’s apology
When asked by reporters regarding Najib’s statement after performing the Friday prayers at Surau Ar-Rahman in Precinct 16, Putrajaya, today, Anwar was quoted by BERNAMA as saying he welcomes the apology.

“Terima baik, terima baik (I accept it well).”

In Najib’s statement yesterday at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex, which was read out by his son, Datuk Mohamad Nizar Najib, the convicted Prime Minister said that after much reflection over 26 months in jail following his conviction in the SRC International case, it pains him to know that the 1MDB debacle took place when he was Finance Minister and Prime Minister.
However, Najib stressed that recent court hearings and convictions of the Petro Saudi executives in the Switzerland courts proved that he was not the mastermind behind 1MDB and he didn’t collaborate with Jho Low in deceiving 1MDB of its funds.
Najib also revealed that he was in deep shock after finding the extent of 1MDB’s “wretched and unconscionable shenanigans”.
He further asserted that he had already been punished politically and hoped that he wouldn’t be victimised legally as it was clear that he was not the mastermind or collaborated with Jho Low, as revealed by recent events.
The statement comes just 1 week before the Kuala Lumpur High Court is set to deliver the verdict on the 1MDB trial involving Najib.
