A Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) graduate celebrated New Year’s Eve in Dannok, Thailand, and was arrested while returning through the Immigration Department in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Perlis.

He was found to have consumed ecstasy pills during his New Year’s Eve celebration in Dannok.

The 18-year-old rode a motorcycle from Jitra with his friends to Dannok on Wednesday (31 December) to attend a concert in conjunction with the 2026 New Year celebration. He claimed that he only drank carbonated water while watching the concert and fireworks display before his friends allegedly put ecstasy pills in his drink.

He later felt dizzy after consuming the drink and could not recall what happened

During his trip home through the Immigration complex, he tested positive for drugs during a screening conducted by the Kedah National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK). Kedah AADK Director Khairul Anwar Ahmad said the operation was carried out to detect drug abusers and prevent substances from entering the country’s borders.

He added that this year’s statistics showed a decrease in arrests compared to last year, with 13 individuals testing positive for drugs during the operation, compared to 23 last year.

Unfortunately, most of those arrested were youths who admitted to taking drugs for fun.

“For this year, we see the highest number of ketamine-type drugs, followed by methylenedioxy methamphetamine (MDMA)—a stimulant drug such as Ecstasy pills or horse pills—as well as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC),” Khairul said, as reported in a video posted on AADK Kedah’s TikTok account.

Alarmingly, Khairul revealed that based on interrogations, the drugs were purchased on the roadside.

This is not a new phenomenon involving youth and drug abuse. Earlier this year, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) nabbed over 30 university students during a house party in Subang Jaya, with four of them linked to drug trafficking.
