One may have the luxury of earning 5 figures every month, but without access to a work-life balance.

A Malaysian man recently shared that he left his RM15,000 per month job in the plantation sector after it took a toll on his mental health. With limited time not only for his family and friends but also for himself, he was later diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and suffered multiple panic attacks.

That was the cue for him to bid farewell to his job

Today, the man earns much less than his previous job by relying on gigs and food delivery jobs to survive. With the significant drop in his income, the man also acknowledged that his monthly salary can be unstable at times, given the uncertainties.

However, there is only one thing that matters most to him today: He’s happier.

“I get to see my friends and spend time with my family. I can even play games whenever I want. I don’t have to answer my boss at 3 AM anymore.”

Life is simpler, but the man had a lot to highlight in his viral Threads post on how the change of scenery has improved his life. With the obligation to be available to his employer 24/7 gone, he also pointed out that he no longer needs to face “fussy clients” in the morning.

Life has improved, and according to him, he has stopped taking his medications for over a month now.

“It’s not perfect, but I actually feel lighter. I think I’m going to be okay. For the first time in a while, I actually feel free,” he expressed.

No day off, just for the sake of money

In his interaction with other social media users, he also explained that he barely had a day off and worked every day, just for the sake of the cash. He added that his panic attacks often came without a warning, and he had to keep track of his heartbeats by putting on a smart watch.

When panic came knocking, he made sure to keep himself calm by doing the breathing techniques.

How do you cope with the stress at work and at home?
