Earlier today, it was reported that Kota Melaka MP, Khoo Poay Tiong, had suggested that the history of all Malaysian races be included in primary school Sejarah textbooks, adding that the inclusion may nurture the spirit of unity among the younger generation.
In response to this, UMNO Youth Movement Exco, Wan Muhammad Zuhir Ghazali, made another suggestion.
Taking to his Facebook page, he proposed that all races should also be able to mingle in schools through the abolishment of vernacular schools.
He wrote, “If the goal is to form unity, then it is also necessary to have a unified syllabus in all school streams. There must also be a mix of races in each school.”
“This is more important. It is more major and concrete instead of being selective and segregating. Having schools according to certain races. Their syllabus is also different. Even the subject of history in vernacular schools is not taught in the national language.”
He went on to explain that students mingling with other races on a daily basis can form a more practical sense of unity, as compared to only reading about other races in a textbook.
“Don’t tell me that you just want to (nurture unity) just in theory. There isn’t even practical unity from the beginning. Mingling and speaking in the same language, that is the most important thing to form unity,”
“If we demand single stream schools and abolish vernacular schools, why won’t you all agree?”
