Anwar Ibrahim is on board with the idea of limiting the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years or two terms.
He said if the proposal gets two-thirds support from MPs, it can be brought to the Dewan Rakyat to amend the constitution, as reported by Utusan Malaysia.
“I’m already exhausted after only 2 years”
Anwar also mentioned that discussions were still ongoing to get everyone’s support before moving forward.
“I agree with the idea because if someone stays in power too long, it could do more harm than good. But don’t worry, I probably won’t even last 10 years. I’m already exhausted after just 2,” he said.
He added that Pakatan Harapan fully backs the proposal but stressed the need for proper discussions and consensus before making any changes.
“We need to explain and listen. If we get two-thirds support and come to an agreement, we can amend the constitution in the next session. But we shouldn’t rush into it because the opposition’s stance is unpredictable, especially since they could change their minds anytime.”
“DAP fully supports Anwar continuing as Prime Minister”
Earlier, DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke Siew Fook, in his keynote speech, expressed hope that the government would realise the constitutional amendment to limit the Prime Minister’s term to a maximum of 10 years.
He assured that the proposal isn’t about asking Anwar to step down but about making the amendment part of his legacy.
“We’re not asking Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to step down as Prime Minister, but we want this amendment to be his legacy—a reform in the country’s administrative system. We also want to make it clear that DAP fully supports Anwar continuing as Prime Minister beyond the 16th General Election (GE16),” he said.
