The Covid-19 outbreak has left us Malaysians feeling worried about what is to come.
But ever noticed that at every government announcement done by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, there is a sense of calm and confidence from the rakyat towards the actions of the government despite the dire situation the country is currently in?
According to image consultant Asnawi Yusof, the psychology of clothing impacts the way we perceive a message, giving the idea that there is an association between clothing and perception.
If you look at the announcements made, Tan Sri Muhyiddin is seen in a sort of informal fashion, no blazer, wearing a dark grey tie and a white shirt with rolled-up sleeves.
According to Asnawi, the outfit helped our PM to present himself as sincere and honest with a ‘nothing to hide’ attitude, while the tie is seen as a sign of peace, harmony and an indication that he wants to be close to the people.
“Muhyiddin has also lessened formalities by ditching the blazer and becoming more down to earth.”
This is different, compared to what he wore when announcing Prihatin stimulus package on the 27th of March where he wore a full suit, a name tag and blue tie.
“What he wore brought about an air of importance since he was about to announce an RM250 billion stimulus package.”
This was the moment that Tan Sri Muhyiddin had to show that he is trustworthy, charismatic and professional.
But it is not all down to what you wear.
Choice of words also plays a part as he interlaces the use of layman terms and English to suit people from all walks of life.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is certainly an exemplary leader!
