PM Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim tabled the Budget 2024 in Parliament last Friday (October 13), but the talks involving money and budget are still ongoing, especially at times when many Malaysians are still struggling to make ends meet.

This time, Anwar has a reminder to the employers in the private sector. He wants to see them following the government’s lead when it comes to handling wages of employees – consider increasing the employees’ wages to match productivity and performance.

In his Facebook post yesterday (October 16), Anwar said he is highly encouraging a fair distribution of profits through increased salaries for employees.

“This applies to the private sectors, especially those organisations that make millions every year.”

Anwar also shared some complaints that he received from employees of private sector, who told him that the management of their workplace is not rewarding its workers in terms of wages even after making RM400 million in the past year.

“The company made RM400 million last year but their wages remain stagnant.”

He hopes the government’s efforts in recognising civil servants are also taken up by the private sector, especially those who report good profits.

“Provide a reasonable wage increase in the current circumstances.”

As for the review of civil servants’ salaries, Anwar said that he is expecting it to be ready by the middle of next year so that important details can be made during the tabling of Budget 2025 next year. In the meantime, he also encourages everyone to spend moderately to stop any unwanted wastage in terms of budget, whether on a large scale or as small as daily affairs in the office.

This is perhaps a good time for you to talk to your boss about a reasonable increment, now that the PM has spoken! Are you expecting a salary increase in the next performance review?
