Massive protests have broken out across Indonesia, turning violent and leaving several people dead, including a food delivery rider.

The death of Affan Kurniawan fueled even more anger on the streets after he was run over and killed by an armoured police vehicle during the August 28 rally while he was out on a delivery.

The officer responsible has been dismissed

In the latest update, the officer behind the wheel has been dismissed from his post after being found guilty of an ethics violation over his role in Kurniawan’s death.

According to CNA, national police spokesman Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko said officer Cosmas K. Gae had acted “unprofessionally” during the protest, calling his actions “reprehensible.”

As a result, he’s been given a dishonourable discharge from the national police.

Cosmas later defended himself, saying he was just doing his duty to keep public order and protect other officers, and that he never meant to cause anyone’s death.

He added that he only found out about Kurniawan’s death through social media. Cosmas, who has three days to appeal the decision, insisted:

“There was no intention, honestly, for God’s sake. I never meant to hurt anyone,” he said.

Sinar Harian added that Cosmas cried following the decision.

6 other officers were also arrested

Meanwhile, Harian Metro reported that police have also arrested six other officers over the incident, which the government-linked National Human Rights Commission said left at least 10 people dead during protests across the country.

The deaths were reported in Jakarta, Makassar in South Sulawesi, Central Java, and Papua.

The Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS) also said that at least 20 people were still missing as of last Monday.
