Six officers from the Hulu Sungai Tengah (HST) Police Department in Indonesia are currently undergoing a 14-day rehabilitation programme after testing positive for drugs.

Hulu Sungai Tengah District Police Chief, AKBP Jupri JHP Tampubolon, said the programme includes physical and disciplinary training, all under close supervision by senior officers.

One officer was shot while trying to flee

According to Radar Banjarmasin, HST Police Chief AKBP Jupri JHP Tampubolon revealed how they decided to conduct urine tests at police stations after one was caught by the South Kalimantan National Narcotics Agency (BNN).

“At first, when we conducted urine tests, all the results came back negative. But then we changed our approach,  we went directly to the field with the Anti-Narcotics Division and other departments to visit every police station. Last week, we found six officers who tested positive for drugs,” he explained.

This strict action was taken following the case of a police officer from the Limpasu Police Station, known as MI, who was shot by the Provincial National Narcotics Agency (BNNP) while attempting to escape arrest after being suspected of drug abuse, as reported by Sinar Harian.

The 6 officers are required to pray in congregation

Jupri added that the six officers are now required to attend daily morning and afternoon roll calls, undergo physical training, and participate in intensive spiritual development.

“They were given helmets and backpacks and must report for roll call three times a day. They’re also required to exercise three times daily and perform the five daily prayers at the surau under strict supervision,” he said.

Authorities have also ramped up regular urine testing for officers as a proactive measure to curb drug abuse within the police force.

Confirmation of the identities and ranks of the six officers who tested positive for drugs is still pending.
