A determined woman with a disability in China was recently accepted into a top university after studying the same books her underperforming son once used.

Known only as Yang, she recently received her admission letter from the graduate school of Southwest Forestry University in Kunming, Yunnan province, where she’ll be pursuing law after passing the entrance exam on her second attempt.

She used the books left by her son to study for the test

She lived with disfiguring injuries for more than 10 years

The 50-year-old woman has been living with severe, disfiguring injuries for over a decade after a fire left her disabled, the South China Morning Post reported.

She eventually had to give up her job due to depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and has been relying on a pension for the past few years.

“I got depressed. Now I’m 50 and ready to start a new journey to pursue my dream of getting a master’s degree in law,” she said.

Back in 2013, the fire left her face scarred and badly burned both her arms, causing her to lose almost all function in them. Thankfully, her right arm still retained about half its function, which now allows her to continue her studies.

“My retired life is studying”

Yang decided to prepare for the graduate school’s entrance exam two years ago when her son failed the same test, and used her pension to fund her master’s degree.

“I was helping him sort out the review materials after he finished the test. I thought what a pity if we sold these books for so little money. When I browsed some pages, I realised the contents were not difficult for me. So I started preparing for the test, using the books left by my son,” she added.

She admitted the test wasn’t easy, saying English was the toughest subject for her since she hadn’t used the language in over 20 years.

“The test was quite challenging. Thanks to the support and company of my husband and my son, I carried it through to victory. Retirement for some people is devoted to square dancing or travelling. My retired life is studying. No matter what stage of your life, you should never give up on your dream,” she added.
