Muslim men in the state will face legal action if they skip Friday prayers without a solid reason, and according to the Chairman of the State Information, Da’wah and Sharia Empowerment Committee, Dr Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi, said that the reminder is important because Friday prayers are not merely a ritual but a symbol of Muslim’s obedience.

Dr Muhammad said the punishment was in line with the amendment to the Sharia Criminal Enactment (Takzir) 2016, which came into effect after being enacted several years ago.

“Before the amendment was made, only those who missed Friday prayers three times in a row could be subject to action by religious authorities.”

“With the amendment, even if the individual involved does not attend for once, action can be taken according to the law.”

It’s part of the authorities’ effort to educate and maintain the dignity of Islam

He clarified that the punishment will only be imposed as a last resort if the warning is ignored by individuals who neglect to fulfil their obligations.

Dr Muhammad added that the installation of commemorative banners in mosque courtyards across the state was intended to provide a clear warning about the obligation to perform Friday prayers.

“Muslims in the state should see the implementation of the law as an effort to educate and maintain the dignity of Islam, especially in shaping the awareness of the younger generation.”

Enforcement action can be taken through reports from the public or patrols and integrated operations by officers from the Terengganu Religious Affairs Department (JHEAT) together with local authorities (PBT), as reported by Harian Metro.
