Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced yesterday (2 February) that the Movement Control Order (MCO) will be extended from 5 to 18 February.

Malaysians are probably not surprised at this announcement, seeing that there is still an upward trend in new cases over the past few weeks despite the MCO being implemented nationwide except Sarawak. However, there are those who simply cannot afford to stay home as their livelihoods have been greatly affected.

The question still begs, what exactly is the government doing to break the chain of Covid-19 in Malaysia? At the rate the country is going, the MCO doesn’t seem to be working and many lives are at stake.

One Facebook user painted a ‘perfect’ analogy of what Malaysians are facing today. Kaizer Ran wrote a comment on a post about the MCO extension, which has since caught the attention of many netizens who share the same sentiments.

Here’s what his comment says:

“At a zoo, the keeper saw a kangaroo outside the fence. Immediately, he raised the fence up to 3m high.”

“The next day, he saw the kangaroo outside again. He raise the fence to 6m high.”

“The next day, he saw the kangaroo outside again. He raise the fence to 9m high.”

“The next day again, he saw the kangaroo outside again. He raise the fence to 12m. Still the kangaroo is outside the next day.”

“The pony asked the kangaroo how she managed to get out.”

“Kangaroo says the door is not locked. So no matter how high the fence, it is no use.”

“Our MCO is like the fence!!”

What Kaizer Ran is trying to portray is how seemingly ineffective the MCO has been for the past three weeks. But it seems like all the government can do is to extend it again and again, without a clear and solid plan on how to tackle the virus within the community.

Other netizens expressed similar views with many saying that extending the MCO is “useless”.

  • “People are still going around everywhere like nothings happening. Look at Penang’s traffic. What’s the point of extending when this method is useless to curb the cases?”
  • “I wonder what they anticipate to see on 18th Feb. Another extension????”
  • “Why don’t you just change the name MCO to CMCO la? What kind of MCO you implement now?!”
  • “What’s the point of this fake MCO? It’s not effective at all”
  • “Whatever. Shopping malls still open until 10pm. Saw a lot families come out shopping. Those non essential still open. Like jewelry, gold shop, bags, shoes. MCO is just three alphabets. No one cares.”

Let’s just hope that this MCO extension will help decrease the number of new cases daily and that the infectivity rate will begin to drop. The MOH has already predicted that new cases could hit 10,000 daily in the second week of March if it doesn’t.
